A Civil Wedding at Domaine du Grand Darnal in Bruges

Real Weddings

After a year of twists and turns, Claire and Mohamed were finally able to celebrate their wedding at Domaine du Grand Darnal in Bruges. This civil wedding near Bordeaux took place in April 2021, more than a year after Mohamed’s proposal. Here is the story of their wedding day at Grand Darnal, and of the couple behind it.

Claire and Mohamed, One Year Before Their Civil Wedding at Grand Darnal

Claire and Mohamed’s civil ceremony took place on Saturday 3 April 2021, in a superb venue typical of the Bordeaux area: Domaine du Grand Darnal. I will tell you more about it below.

Before that, I would like to look back at this couple’s story. Despite all the ups and downs along the way, Claire and Mohamed’s story allowed us to build a strong bond, much like a friendship.

2020 was the hardest year of my whole career as a wedding photographer. And yet, against all odds, it gave me so much on a human level. What I mean is that I have never been so close to my couples, for whom this period was just as difficult. Of course, I have always been close to them, from my very first couples onwards, but this was something hard to put into words.

And that is exactly what happened with Claire and Mohamed.

Choosing love against all odds

The couple had to postpone their wedding twice: first to April of this year, then to October 2021, when it had originally been planned for... June 2020!

The civil ceremony at Domaine du Grand Darnal was already booked for 3 April, so they decided to keep it while waiting for their religious wedding the following October.

For their civil ceremony, Claire and Mohamed chose to wear different outfits from the ones planned for their religious wedding. They preferred to keep the wedding dress and the groom’s suit for the big day.

Needless to say, their patience was put to the test! Mine too, as a result, but there was no other choice. And yet Claire and Mohamed showed unfailing resilience, fuelled by their unconditional love for each other.

It was this love, and their deep desire to get married, that made me want to give them all my support in such an unusual, stressful and exhausting time.

I first met Claire and Mohamed a year before their wedding at Domaine du Grand Darnal in Bruges. On 13 March 2020, a few days before the first lockdown, we went to Arcachon Bay for an engagement session at the Réservoirs de Piraillan.

At that moment, none of the three of us could have predicted what would happen next...

Grand Darnal in Bruges

Le Grand Darnal, or Domaine du Grand Darnal, is in the town of Bruges, a few kilometres from Bordeaux.

This bourgeois house once belonged to a squire, who left it to his son on his death. In 1746, the younger Darnal sold the estate, its wine cellars and its farmland to a wine merchant.

Today, Domaine du Grand Darnal is a municipal property owned by Bruges town hall. It has a wedding room, a reception and meeting room, and outdoor gardens.

Since 2002, Grand Darnal has once again been a working vineyard, with 1,000 Merlot vines planted. The wine, however, is not produced for sale.

Claire and Mohamed’s union was celebrated by the deputy mayor. Around ten people were allowed inside the room, and the other 15 watched the ceremony from outside, with the windows wide open and the sun shining!

We took a few couple photos straight afterwards, and I must say Claire and Momo were completely at ease, thanks in part to their experience during their engagement session.

I am truly happy to have crossed paths with them and to have been their photographer for their wedding at Domaine du Grand Darnal in Bruges. We will meet again for the third chapter of their wedding story: the religious ceremony in October.

Here is what the couple wrote about me (translated from French):

"We have known Tristan for two years now, and what an encounter! Tristan is a rare gem. Two years of struggling to get married, and he was always there. He knew how to support us and lift our spirits in the hardest moments caused by Covid. Tristan is a truly wonderful person, both professionally and personally. We wanted a photographer for our wedding, and we gained a friend; we can never thank him enough. If you are looking for a photographer, we can only recommend him: you won’t be disappointed."
